Pretty Peonies, Part 1 1 comment

May 5, 2016, posted by Gina – This post is a bit of a teaser but we just couldn’t help ourselves.  We are designing arrangements for a luncheon this Friday and the hostess requested peonies.  We thought it would be fun for you to see the behind the scenes of floral design as well as the after once everything is arranged.

The original variety of peony that we wanted, Karl Rosenfield, was not available so we were given several other options and selected the Paula Fay variety for their beautiful hot pink color.

This box was shipped overnight from Holland and delivered to our door.  Of course, once the box arrives we have to move fast to begin the flower processing.

Upon opening the box, we found the most beautiful peony stems and gave them a fresh cut and placed them in water with floral preservative.  Just like people, after a long journey they are tired and thirsty so we gave them the TLC they needed.

Happy as they can be in their fresh buckets, they will be ready for us to make beautiful arrangements and help our hostess create a lasting memory for her guests.  Stay tuned for the finished creations!

Reviving Vintage Linens

May 2, 2016, posted  by Gina – If you have followed our site for a while you may know that we love vintage and antique linens. Part of the fun of finding these beautiful treasures is the hunt and we work hard to find pieces which we know can be restored to their original beauty.

Our love of flowers, food and entertaining is really about our love of people and we enjoy making even the ordinary things in life pretty.  What brings people together better than a beautiful table, great conversation and friends and family?

mint green table topperRecently, I found this beautiful mint green organza and linen table topper that I believe is from the 40’s or 50’s.  This piece had been treasured and, no doubt, graced a beautiful table. Many times we find linens that are still in their original box with the tags still attached. But sometimes we find beautiful pieces that are slightly yellowed or stained.

You may be wondering how we launder these vintage linens. We use a product called Linen Wash.  In all our years of collecting vintage linens Linen Wash has worked miracles on all but a few pieces.   Many of these older linens have yellowed over the years even if they have been in their original box. Linen Wash gets this out as well as most stains and leaves the linens fresh and clean.  We soak our linens sometimes for days depending on the extent of staining or yellowing.  It is amazing to see them return to their original splendor.

Linen Wash

Searching and collecting these one of a kind linens has become a passion.  They look so beautiful mixed with modern plates, chargers, crystal or whatever pretty things you find to adorn your table … and it’s nice knowing you can bring them back to their original beauty.

Do you have any tips for removing stains from vintage linens? We’d like to hear from you! Click on the title of this post and the comment form will appear at the bottom of the page.

Garden Tour

April 12, 2016, posted by Gina – My love of flowers doesn’t stop at making arrangements but extends to the garden. When we moved to our new home 3 years ago there were only a few shrubs in the backyard.  We found a wonderful landscape architect who transformed our yard into a pretty oasis.

I think my love of gardening and flowers began with my great grandmother.  When I was a little girl, we would work in the yard together.  I can remember planting cannas, autumn sedum, tulips, boxwoods, nandinas and mint.  Even though this was nearly 50 years ago, it seems like yesterday.

Let’s go on a little tour of my newly planted garden and see how things are doing.

In this photo, you can see how the azaleas line the walkway:

The first bloom of many more to come in a grouping of more than 10 drift rose bushes:

rosesThis is sure to be a colorful site for much of the summer.

In the photo below are my chaste lilac, just beginning to sprout a few buds, knockout roses and light pink azaleas.  The colors in this area are so pretty once everything fully comes to life.  The purple blooms of the chaste lilacs combined with the hot pink roses are so pretty.

The agapanthus below is just beginning to make its way out of hibernation.  These have the most beautiful purple star shaped blooms that are gorgeous.

Ahh, the light pink azaleas.  While these blooms look so pretty, fertilizer is in store for them as they are very thin.  They were planted last year and a survived super hot, dry summer.

Here is the view of the path with all of the plants.  I love how the boxwoods line the beds.

This Japanese Yew’s green color combined with it’s unique texture make this such a pretty evergreen for my garden.

And finally, these hot pink azaleas were here when we purchased the house and are a bit more mature.  Is there anything that ushers in spring better than a row of beautiful azaleas?

Before and After: Console

April 10, 2016, posted by Gina – This past week, Son 1 moved into a new apartment and he called me to help him decorate.  I, of course, was thrilled to help him with this task.  He is still pretty young and has a roommate so I guess you would call this apartment a bachelor pad.  With this in mind, I was very cautious about the budget and began searching for items that were more utilitarian rather than high design.

I found a solid wood console table in great shape for $30.  I thought he would have been fine with as it was but he asked if I could paint it or “something”. This was his nice way of telling me he hated it. He is his mama’s son!!

Console before

So, I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and lightly distressed it.  I sent him a photo and he was very happy with the outcome.  I don’t work for Annie Sloan but I’ve mentioned before that the chalk paint is easy to use, requires no priming, is quick drying in between coats and there’s a great selection of colors.  For this piece I used two coats and a layer of clear wax.  I used steel wool to rub in some distressed areas.  It was that easy!  My husband and I are helping him this weekend set up a few things in his new space and I plan on painting a couple of other pieces for him.

How do you like the result? Have you painted an older piece to give it new life? We’d like to hear your thoughts or about your own DYI projects. To leave us your comments click on the title of this post and the comment form will open at the bottom of the page.

Flowers in Paris 1 comment

February 22, 2016, posted by Michelle – We suppose it’s inexcusable that we let Valentine’s Day come and go without posting about roses. Will you excuse us anyway? Maybe some photos of flowers from last week’s trip to Paris will help. Flowers at kiosks and in front of shops spill out onto the sidewalks making an already breathtakingly beautiful city all the more so. Enjoy!

Christmas Florals

December 14, 2015, posted by Gina – Earlier this month I worked on several floral arrangements for a Christmas/Engagement party held at a friend’s home.  I had a lot of fun working on these and I hope you will get some good ideas from them.

The noble fir wreath was beautiful on its own but I added the red bow to coordinate with some of the red in the dining room where it hung.  The champagne bucket held a tall arrangement filled with roses, stock, snapdragons and larkspur. It was the dining room table centerpiece and was complimented by a couple of coordinating smaller arrangements.  A mercury vase held a stunning all white composition and a few other cheery arrangements were scattered about the house in McCarty vases.

Noël: Decorations from the Heart* 2 comments

December 11, 2015, posted by Michelle – Bonjour! I am spreading a little cheer from across the pond and hope you like this Christmas tree collection. These trees are part of the annual *Les Décos du Cœur event in Lyon and they are sponsored by companies throughout the region. People can participate in a drawing this weekend to win various prizes and the trees will be auctioned off on Sunday. The proceeds go to a charity that helps the elderly in need. A few of these trees were decorated with a distinct French flair: the red, white and blue tree, the Olympique Lyonnais soccer team tree and the tree with macarons in transparent ornaments – that one was also topped with a chef’s toque in lieu of the traditional star.

Silk Market in Lyon, France 1 comment

Silk at La Bourse, LyonNovember 22, 2015, posted by Michelle – Every November, Lyon hosts an annual Silk Market and we never miss this unique opportunity to shop for silk and items made of silk all in one place. For centuries Lyon was the capital of the silk trade and manufacturing in Europe and is still a reference for high quality silk. This is a showcase for all things silky, from subtle pocket squares to bold upholstery; there’s even a small silkworm exhibit.

Tassinari et ChatelAs if browsing through yards and yards of silk from manufacturers like Tassinari et Chatel, Veraseta and Denis et Fils wasn’t exciting enough, it’s held in one of the most beautiful buildings in town. Le Palais de la Bourse, built in 1860 in the center of downtown Lyon, was originally home to several different commercial enterprises, including silk brokers. The impressive architecture features arches, sculptures, gorgeous painted ceilings and grand staircases so it’s the perfect setting for showcasing sumptuous silk.

After sorting through bolts of silk, remnants, ribbons, scarves, ties, purses and pillows we came away with a few yards of silk (pictured below, left) from Tassinari et Chatel and plan on making some very special things.
